FOOD SAFETY AND RECALLS
Safety Guidelines
As a member of the national food bank network Feeding America, Tarrant Area Food Bank adheres to the same guidelines that grocery retailers, food manufacturers and restaurants must follow:
- The Current Good Manufacturing Practices for the Manufacturing, Processing, and Packaging, or Handling Human Food developed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- Model Salvage Code developed by FDA and the Association of Food and Drug Officials
- Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act
- Fair Packaging and Labeling Act
|
And, several staff members are ServSafe certified.
Food and grocery products that are donated to Tarrant Area Food Bank are carefully handled and tracked throughout the distribution process, so that product retrieval is possible in the event of a recall.
Product Recalls
When a recall occurs, Tarrant Area Food Bank receives notifications through the Food and Drug Administration and Feeding America, the national network of regional food banks. We then take the following steps:
- The notice is received by the Inventory Control Director’s office.
- The Inventory Control Director reads and investigates to determine if the recall pertains to any product that has been received at the Food Bank.
- If the recall pertains to Tarrant Area Food Bank, the Inventory Control Director issues a memo to be sent to agencies via email, fax and ListServe publication.
- Agencies are asked to check their shelves for any product and are instructed to return any recalled product to the Food Bank.
- The Inventory Control Director also makes warehouse staff aware of the recall.
- Warehouse staff then check our shelves for the product and remove it from our inventory.
- The Inventory Control Director contacts the appropriate entity for disposal instructions.
- Copies of Recall, Memo and Disposal forms are kept in the Inventory Control Director’s office.
