WHO WE ARE
Communities where no one has to go hungry.
Empowering communities to eliminate hunger by providing food, education and resources through innovation and collaboration.
We value and embrace diversity, fairness and inclusion as fundamental to our vision of empowering communities where no one has to go hungry.
We believe that access to healthy food is a basic human right and not a privilege. All people deserve regular, nutritious meals.
We are committed to conducting honest dialogue with all community partners. Through this dialogue, we will strive to continuously improve.
Not to be confused with other food banks in Fort Worth, Tarrant Area Food Bank is a member of Feeding America. This national network of more than 200 nonprofit food banks serves all 50 states and U.S. Territories. We also belong to Feeding Texas, which coordinates sharing of food donations and other resources among the 21 member food banks in the state.
From the beginning, Tarrant Area Food Bank's business model involved collaborating with commercial food businesses and the community to obtain donated food and with other hunger-relief charities to distribute the food to families and individuals in need.
Chartered by the State of Texas in December 1981, the Food Bank began distributing food in October of the following year. Three months later, at the end of 1982, it had distributed donated food to 50 charities in Fort Worth, thanks to commercial donors and a holiday food drive by the Fort Worth community.
Since then, with the help of thousands of volunteers and more than 300 partner charities, Tarrant Area Food Bank has distributed more than 340,000,000 pounds of food and household products.
In the late 1990s, we began implementing programs to complement our food distribution program.
We now offer nutrition education to adults, seniors and families receiving food assistance, three different feeding programs for children, free culinary job training for low-income adults and community gardening education and technical assistance. We also offer assistance to individuals and families in applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/Food Stamps) and related benefits.
For the community, we offer tours of our warehouse and guest speakers knowledgeable about local hunger and Tarrant Area Food Bank's activities.
